A Code of Ethics for Digital News Websites

Introduction

The Digital News Publishers Association has established this voluntary Code of Ethics to uphold the highest standards of digital journalism and protect the independence of journalists, content entities, and publishers. This code aims to guide members in responsible digital publishing while ensuring adherence to constitutional freedoms and legal requirements.

Core Principles

  1. Adherence to Law: Digital news websites must comply with Indian laws, including the Constitution, media-related legislation, IPC, CrPC, and the Information Technology Act.
  2. Journalistic Ethics: Members must adhere to established journalistic ethics and practices, maintaining the highest professional standards.
  3. Accuracy, Transparency, and Fairness: Avoid publishing inaccurate, baseless, or distorted material. Conduct thorough pre-publication verification and avoid defamation.
  4. Right of Reply: Provide individuals or parties affected by allegations with an opportunity to respond. If a response is received after publication, incorporate it into the original article.
  5. Corrections and Removals: If false or inaccurate information is discovered, promptly edit, delete, or remove the relevant content upon request from the affected party.
  6. Intellectual Property Rights: Respect copyright, trademarks, and service marks of others. Obtain necessary permissions and acknowledge ownership rights.
  7. Sensitive Reporting: Exercise caution when reporting on sensational matters and crimes. Preserve the presumption of innocence and avoid speculation on evidence, witnesses, or victims.
  8. Special Care: Take extra precautions when reporting on sensitive topics such as sexual harassment, child abuse, rape, and matters involving minors. Adhere to relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act regarding obscene and sexually explicit content.
  9. Grievance Redressal: Implement a grievance redressal mechanism as per the Information Technology Act and ensure timely response to complaints.
  10. Training and Awareness: Conduct regular training programs for editorial staff to enhance their understanding of relevant laws, ethical guidelines, and best practices.

Specific Considerations

  • Victim Protection: Avoid disclosing names, identifying details, or photographs of victims, especially in cases of sexual harassment, child abuse, or rape.
  • Communal Harmony: Exercise caution when reporting on communal or religious disputes, ensuring that content promotes peace and harmony.
  • Court Reporting: Adhere to legal guidelines for reporting on courts and judicial matters, ensuring fairness and accuracy.
  • Privacy: Respect the privacy of individuals, especially those not in public life.

By adhering to this Code of Ethics, digital news publishers can contribute to a responsible and trustworthy media landscape while upholding the principles of journalistic integrity and public interest.
